How do I know if I am a candidate for a Panniculectomy? This is a common question we hear from many patients. We have put together this information to help you better understand what procedure you would be most suited for.
What is the difference: Panniculectomy vs. Tummy Tuck
A Panniculectomy is NOT a cosmetic operation. A Panniculectomy addresses the large flap of overhanging skin on the lower abdomen that commonly results from massive weight loss. The goal of surgery is to relieve some of the symptoms caused by the excess skin such as rashes, ulcerations, etc. A Panniculectomies primary goal is functional and NOT to make the abdomen look better. It also does NOT repair separated abdominal muscles or make the core stronger. Sometimes insurance companies cover the cost of a Panniculectomy as long as very strict criteria are met. Some of the criteria are listed below, but check with your insurance company for specific information.
A Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic AND functional procedure that is designed to not only address excess skin in the upper and lower abdomen but also repairs separated abdominal muscles and helps make the core stronger, thereby shaping and contouring the entire abdomen. This can be combined with liposuction of the back, bra-line, love handles, and abdomen to give patients the best overall results. This procedure is NOT covered by insurance.
Sometimes patients that do qualify for insurance-covered panniculectomy also want their entire trunk to look better. You may be able to combine insurance and cosmetic surgery together. A patient care coordinator will be able to assist you if this is the case.
Ballpark range for Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty with liposuction: $11,000 – $14,000
